FAQ Bottles
This chemical product has been in commercial use for over 40 years and has been employed to make hard plastic such as polycarbonate and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate has been used in various products such as water bottles, babies’ bottles, food containers, etc. Epoxy resin has a wide range of uses such as the coating on the interior surface of food cans including infant milk formula cans.
It is believed that BPA, in large quantities, could cause health problems. Around the world, health authorities have set migration limits of BPA in polycarbonate babies’ bottles. Babelito-as a pioneer in this field and ahead of new standards in various countries- offers the most complete line of BPA-free plastic and glass baby’ bottles on the market.
Since 2010 we have manufactured our products using exclusively BPA-free materials, including baby bottles, spill proof cups, dishes, cutlery sets, pacifiers and breast pumps. We made this decision so that you can be sure you are giving your baby safe products for his healthy and happy development.
Our Babelito baby bottles, pacifiers, teethers and cups do not contain phthalate. Phthalate is added to plastic to increase flexibility; but as silicone does not contain it, our Babelito silicone nipples used in baby bottles as well as silicone pacifies and teethers are phthalate-free.
European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other food regulatory agencies around the world, established maximum phthalate content in flexible plastic. Those below this threshold are considered safe to be used in baby products. All of our products strictly conform to these regulations and are officially approved by government agencies to prove compliance with these regulations.
All our Babelito baby bottles and spill proof cups not containing BPA are identified with the “BPA-free” phrase at the front or back of the product.
We have three baby bottle characteristic designs: straight or standard, angled or physiological and wide necked. Our Babelito baby bottles come in different materials: polypropylene (PP) –BPA-free plastic, copolyester (tritan) and glass, all of them BPA-free. The choice of the baby bottle is decided by each mother and her baby.
The transparency of Babelito baby bottles depends on the materials used.
When polycarbonate -a very translucent material which contains BPA- was withdrawn from the market, we decided to replace it with polypropylene -an absolutely safe product for your baby. You may notice that some polypropylene baby bottles will be less transparent over time. When they are less clear we commend the replacement of the baby bottle. Babelito decided to continue innovating and decided not to use only polypropylene, but to incorporate copolyester to baby bottles’ manufacturing process. This material is BPA-free, state-of-the-art, less porous than polypropylene, more resistant to high temperatures, and also as transparent as glass. This is a positive development of baby bottles toward something better.
An important feature of materials for baby bottles is low porosity. In this connection, copolyester having very low porosity and allowing for simple and efficient cleaning prevents remaining microscopic food residues.
Baby bottles of his material or made of glass remain translucent and clean as new, without much effort, though the advantage of copolyester is that it not easily breakable and not as dangerous as glass. Baby bottles of this material are the maximum innovation as regards baby bottle materials.
Babelito is proud to be an Argentine trademark worldwide pioneering the development of these baby bottles.
Yes, glass bottles are not unbreakable, they can break or chip when hit or dropped; for this reason you cannot give this kind of bottle to your baby so that it holds the glass bottle by himself. Likewise, abrupt changes in temperature may also help to break or crack glass bottles (for example, when pouring boiling water into the baby bottle). Often cracks are not seen immediately. After using the bottle several times, cracks extend and finally the bottle breaks, surely in a moment when the baby bottle was not exposed to large temperature changes. Therefore, breaking cannot be explained.
After sterilization, allow baby bottles to cool before using them. We also recommend placing them on a dishcloth or cutting wooden board, not directly on the kitchen counter.
Cleaning is essential. Wash bottles with Babelito bottle brush using neutral detergent and lukewarm water. All the parts of the baby bottle, such as screw rings, sealing discs, caps and, especially, nipples, are to be washed with Babelito bottle brush, lukewarm water and neutral detergent. Nipples may be better washed when turned inside out as if they were socks, being careful not to tear the hole in the upper part of the nipple. This way you have access to all the spaces of the nipple.
Plastic baby bottles resist dropping; and though they resist drops and hits related to regular use they are not totally unbreakable. The advantage they have is that even breaking because of a very violent drop does not generate chips that could do any harm to your baby.
Babelito standard latex and silicone nipples are offered in 3 sizes. Each one has a suction hole in the upper part of the nipple, its diameter appropriate to their size. Size 1: with a small suction hole; Size 2: with a medium hole and Size 3: with a big hole. Thus, our nipples provide for the growth of your baby and accompany it with different suction holes sizes in the feeding flow your baby needs as it grows.
Wash your hands and make sure that surfaces and utensils to be used are clean. To wash bottles use a neutral detergent y and lukewarm water, rinse thoroughly (dishwasher can be used, only top shelf). To sterilize, boil in water all the parts separately during 5 minutes. Verify the baby bottle correctly is assembled before using. Caution: Be careful when cleaning the nipple with a nipple washer brush or sponge not to go through the suction hole as this could result into nipple tear.
In the case of glass baby bottles place all the parts separately in a pan at room temperature. Heat water slowly until it boils during 5 minutes. Do not immerse the bottle in boiling water; a thermal shock may cause cracks or breaks. Allow to cool before using.
Yes, it is recommended to sterilize baby bottles before each use for newborns and until they are 6 months of age. You can use a steam sterilizer or place all the parts of Babelito baby bottle in a pan with cold water and simmer for 5 minutes. Do not leave the bottle boiling longer than recommended because it could be damaged. Allow baby bottles to cool before using them, especially if they are glass bottles.
Before sterilizing, remember:
- Always wash your hands before preparing or feeding your baby.
- Have a clean surface where to place the baby bottles recently sterilized.
- Wash the baby bottles and its parts in lukewarm water with soft detergent immediately after using them. This helps to prevent difficulties to remove milk residues sticking to the baby’s bottle or nipple.
- After washing them, rinse and sterilize baby bottles. Remember to follow cleaning instructions on the packaging.
After 6 months of age, most babies have developed enough antibodies so that you can sterilize bottles and nipples occasionally for a thorough cleaning. If your baby becomes sick, we recommend sterilizing its baby bottles and all their parts every day and consulting your baby’s pediatrician on special measures to be taken until your baby recovers.
Yes, though it is not advisable since it heats unevenly and your baby might get burnt. If you decide to use this method to warm your baby’s milk in the bottle, always remember to remove the screw rings, the cap and the nipple before heating; and once ready, shake the bottle to unify the temperature of the formula. Always remember to check the formula’s temperature before feeding your baby.
No. We only recommend using Babelito nipples with our baby bottles.
No, only Babelito wide-mouth nipples can be used with our wide-mouth baby bottles.
Our Babelito baby bottles have a sealing disk, also most our caps reach the stop with the nipple, thus increasing non spill safety.
To use a sealing disk, take the nipple inside out and place it in the neck of the bottle, press the sealing disk in the screw ring and screw it to the baby bottle. Note: to create a non-leak closure, screw it to the baby bottle, the nipple or spout is to be included. This way you can travel with Babelito baby bottles sealed.
To help your baby to avoid colic, it is very important you choose the right size of nipple which has to be full of milk while you feed it.
The exclusive valve of the nipple bends so that the air enters the bottle instead of going into your baby’s tummy.
When your baby is 8 months of age, you can encourage it to start drinking from a spill proof cup. Babelito’s spouts and spill proof cups ease the transition from baby bottle feeding to drinking from a glass.
Yes. If you are thinking of going back to work or wish to share your baby’s feeding with other family members or a caregiver, combining baby bottle feeding and breast feeding is a good option. Breast milk is the best food for the nursing baby; therefore, if you want to maintain your milk supply, you will need to pump it on a daily basis so that the milk supply will not diminish. The pumped breast milk can be stored in the fridge during 24 hours at 6°C or in the freezer up to three months at -5°C.
Remember that breast milk should be given at body temperature. To warm breast milk just taken from the fridge, place the baby bottle with milk in a pan with hot water, stirring the liquid to assure a uniform temperature. You always have to check the milk temperature before feeding your baby.
Always consult the pediatrician about how to store, freeze, thaw and heat breast milk.
The milk should be at an approximate temperature of 37°C (body temperature). To warm it up in the proper manner, place the baby bottle with milk (breast milk or formula) within a pan with boiling water, stirring the liquid to assure a uniform temperature. Before feeding your baby, always test the temperature of the milk by squirting a little on to your inner wrist. It should be felt neither hot nor cold. We do not recommend to heat milk in microwave since liquid may be heated unevenly and your baby might get burnt.
- Clean the work surface and wash your hands.
- Wash and sterilize baby bottles, nipples, caps and other utensils you will use to mix the formula.
- Boil drinking water during 5 minutes. When the water is warm or cold, add the correct quantity in a measuring cup or in the baby bottle to be used.
- Using the scoop included in each formula you can measure the correct quantity of powder infant formula. Use the back of a clean and dry knife to level each scoop. Never exceed the manufacturer’s instructions; this could be harmful to your baby.
- Add the powder to the previously boiled water and stir the formula with a sterilized spoon until the formula is completely dissolved.
- When assembling the baby bottle, place the nipple through the lower part of the screw ring and pull it upwards, the nipple should make a click sound. Cover the nipple with the cap to keep it clean up to feeding time.
- Always check the milk temperature before feeding your baby.
- Throw away any unfinished portion of milk.
Tilt the bottle so the milk completely fills the nipple and the bottle neck. Otherwise your baby could take in air and it could cause discomfort. Make sure your baby stops sucking when there are only milk bubbles in the nipple. Air ingestion could cause colic. Never leave your baby unattended when bottle feeding.
FAQ Bottle Teats
Both materials are safe, resistant and trustable, but they have different characteristics.
Latex is a natural material, of golden brown color, with a high degree of elasticity, excellent resistance to pulling and stretching. Latex is exceptionally flexible, environmental friendly, and it does not attract dust as it does not generate static electricity; however, it is very sensitive to direct heat and light. We recommend you keep latex nipples in a dry, template place, do not expose to direct sunlight.
Silicone is a synthetic, colorless (though it can be colored), odorless and tasteless material. Its surface is soft and extremely resistant to high temperatures, but less elastic than latex. Silicone may tear more easily than latex once its surface has been damaged.
The type of nipple you choose depends greatly on your baby and the material it feels more comfortable with. No matter which one you choose, make sure that you check nipples regularly. Replace nipple immediately if they become sticky, cracked or if it has any other sign of damage.
The only difference is that Babelito wide mouth nipples are preferred because they mimic mother’s breast helping your baby not to swallow air while drinking from the bottle. Their wide mouth is also easier to clean.
We design our Babelito standard mouth nipples in sizes 1, 2 and 3. Each size has a suction hole, its diameter in keeping with feeding flow: “Size 1”: slow flow, “Size 2”: medium flow and “Size 3”: fast flow.
This way, Babelito nipples take into consideration, by means of their different sizes, the growth of the baby and also accompany the growing need of their feeding flow with the different sizes of suction holes.
We design our Babelito wide mouth nipples in sizes 1, 2 and 3. Each size is determined by the diameter of the suction hole that milk flow allows: “Size 1”: slow flow, “Size 2”: medium flow and “Size 3”: fast flow. This way, our Babelito nipples accompany the baby’s feeding flow growing need.
Wash nipples with water and neutral detergent and rinse them well before each use. Monitor that the suction hole is clean and there are no rests of dry milk around it or plugging it. Once washed, sterilize in boiling water during 5 minutes. Let the nipple cool before giving it to your baby. Silicone nipples can also be washed in dishwasher before sterilization.
Yes. It is very important to sterilize them, especially during the first six months of age when the immune system of the baby still needs strengthening. Wash them carefully to remove any rest of milk since the smallest particle of milk may become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Make sure that the nipple is fully immersed in water for good sterilization during no more than 5 minutes.
Important tips for Babelito nipples and baby bottles:
- The water should be boiling when introducing nipples and baby bottles for sterilization (or count 5 minutes after the water in which nipples and bottles are immersed starts boiling).
- Make sure all the parts are immersed in water.
- Never leave the pan unattended.
- Make sure there is enough water in the pan before starting with sterilization.
Monitor nipples periodically before giving them to your baby. The lifespan of nipples depends on the frequency of use and the care given to them. Replace if nipple becomes sticky, cracked, torn or if it has any other sign of damage.
We design our nipples with a directional air system in their body and a venting system in their base.
Our wide mouth nipples also have directional air systems in their body and an air valve in their base, that allow for a steady entrance of air into the baby’s bottle.
This way, the baby receives a constant feeding flow and minimizes the air intake, reducing the chances of colic and hiccups.
Before using the nipple with your baby, check it is not cracked, torn or it has any other damage. If damaged, replace immediately for a new one. Please, do not try to enlarge the suction hole because it could break.
When cleaning the nipple with a nipple cleaning brush or sponge we recommend that you do not go through the suction hole because it could cause tearing.
